About You

The ideal Farmers Market & Nutrition Intern for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank understands and is passionate about the organization’s mission to provide nutritious food and grocery product to those in need in our 16 county service area. This individual will be a vital component of the Food Sourcing team in sourcing over 10 million pounds of food annually. As the Farmers Market & Nutrition Intern, this team member must demonstrate implementation skills in order to optimize local food donations from local markets and producers that support the Northeast Iowa Food Bank’s strategic and food sourcing plan. The ability to work in a fast-paced and progressive environment will be the key to success in this role, as the Northeast Iowa Food Bank continually strives to work towards closing the Meal Gap in northeast Iowa. A great opportunity for students who want to go into public health, nutrition, social work, agriculture, hospitality, or related careers.

Internship runs from July-October 15th.

Ideal Schedule:

Tuesday 10:00AM-2:00PM (4hr.)

Wednesday 3:00PM – 7:00PM (4hr.)

Thursday 10:00AM-2:00PM (4hr.)

Saturday 10:00AM-2:00PM (4hr.)

About The Job

The Northeast Iowa Food Bank is looking for a dynamic Farmers Market & Nutrition Intern in our Food Sourcing Department. This role will focus on developing and maintaining relationships with food donors to ensure consumable foods are available for the Food Bank. Reporting to the Food Recovery Coordinator, this position will spend significant time out of the office to visit with donors to ensure they have thorough understandings of established donation processes while also targeting efforts towards the expansion of food donors.

The responsibilities of the Farmers Market & Nutrition Intern include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain long-term, productive relationships with farmers market vendors and local growers to ensure a consistent flow of nutritious donated food
  • Collaborate with all levels of the leadership at farmers markets and gleaning opportunities.
  • Educate local food producers on the Iowa State Tax Credit Program
  • Maintain and update the food donor recognition plan for local farmers markets and producers
  • Lead, educate, and maintain the Veggie Voucher and Double Up Food Bucks program
  • Assist in the implementation of the FY22 Feeding America Healthy Eating Research Nutrition Guidelines Integration Grant
  • Represent NEIFB in a professional manner at all times when interfacing with customers, donors, volunteers, and/or constituent providers and fellow employees
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth by the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in accordance with AIB and Feeding America standards, in addition to local, state, and federal regulations
  • Greet, train, and supervise volunteers as well as share the mission of the NEIFB; provide general guidance of projects; assure proper training of volunteers to include specific jobs and safety concerns. Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and appropriately placed
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet Food Bank needs
  • In instances of a federal, state, or locally declared emergency, NEIFB is typically considered an essential service and emergency responder; all employees may be called in to perform regular or emergent duties.

Will need to support:

  • Represent NEIFB is a professional manner at all times when interfacing with customers, donors, volunteers, and/or constituent providers and fellow employees
  • Attend community, farmers markets, and local food organization meetings throughout 16 county service area when applicable
  • Assists in other Food bank activities as required or as assigned by Food Sourcing Manger or Food Recovery Coordinator
  • Work as a team player and support hte mission of the department and organization
Requirements

Required:

  • Ability to drive own vehicle if necessary, however if over the age of 21 the intern can drive the NEIFB vehicle
  • Comfortable engaging with Farmers Market vendors and local producers
  • Self-directed and able to complete projects independently and without supervision
  • Interested or have experience with community outreach and/or programming preferred
  • Comfortable with manual labor outdoors, and have physical ability to lift up to 50-lbs
  • Ability to perform physical labor as necessary (stand/walk/move for long periods of time, lift up to 50 pounds, work with warehouse equipment)
  • Ability to work independently and with staff to achieve objects
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to speak comfortably in front of others about the Food Bank's mission
  • Culturally competent, ability to work with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to be certified in ServSafe Food Handling
  • Must pass a criminal background check
  • Valid driver's license, safe driving record, and current vehicle insurance capable of driving NEIFB van

Preferred

  • Experience and/or knowledge in Farmers Markets, agriculture, health, dietary needs, or customer service
  • Experience with non-profit organizations
  • Experience in warehouse equipment
  • Food Safety and Handling experience.
